High Reduction in a Single Stage

A worm-and-wheel arrangement combines a 90° change in shaft direction with a large speed reduction. The current reference wheel has a 50 mm outer diameter, 40 teeth, and a 12 mm bore. It fits compact actuator layouts that would otherwise require several spur stages.

Low-Friction Steel-Worm Pairing

The wheel uses a POM formulation against the metal worm to reduce sliding friction and mesh noise. Wide tooth contact distributes load across the face. The bore connection, including a set-screw option, fixes the wheel to the output shaft.

Specified Back-Driving Resistance

Required reverse torque determines the lead angle, worm thread count, tooth geometry, material pair, and surface finish. The target is defined as a measurable back-driving torque; self-locking is not assumed for every worm drive.

The wheel is matched to the actual worm rather than specified as a standalone gear. Ratio and reverse-torque target set the thread relationship and working center distance.

The output connection can use a keyed, D-shaped, or insert-supported bore. Resin and lubrication are selected together with the worm surface and duty cycle.

 

Quality Control

 

For first-piece approval, the wheel is mounted against the approved worm to check contact across the intended working face. Bore position is measured from the same assembly datum.

Final pair testing measures running torque, controlled backlash, and the required resistance to back-driving at the specified load.
